The movement didn't begin in the streets,

it began in the courts.

In Jim Crow South Carolina, Rev. James Myles Hinton led a resistance that forced a nation to change.

As a militant NAACP president, he stood on the front lines for 18 years of one of the most

dangerous eras in American history — facing bullets, death threats, and a brutal Ku Klux Klan kidnapping.

Case by case, he helped dismantle segregation from the inside out, doing the heavy lifting and

laying the groundwork for the modern civil rights movement.

He never wavered.

His weapon wasn’t marches. It was the law.

And yet...history forgot his name.

Out of the Shadows is more than a historical documentary.

It is a personal investigation where we retrace our grandfather’s story and

confront the silence surrounding his life.

As we search to reclaim what was lost, a deeper question emerges:

Was he simply forgotten...or was he erased by the very systems he fought to dismantle?

Why Us?

Felicia

When I discovered my step-grandfather had all but vanished from public memory, it felt deeply personal. His erasure echoed my own childhood experience of being silenced. It became a calling.

Raised by my stepfather, I carry an intimate understanding of the personal sacrifices and family dynamics behind this story.

Our family exists because of the legal victories James M. Hinton Sr. helped make possible just years before.

Rodney Jr.

My grandfather’s impact lives on in every integrated classroom and community, every courtroom victory, and every family that looks like mine.

His courage and strategic brilliance shaped the world I grew up in.

History nearly erased his name. I’m telling this story to honor that truth and to reclaim a legacy that should never have been forgotten.

Our father carried these stories because he lived them. He knew the weight of what was at stake

and that one day, it would be our responsibility to share them.

Together, we are bringing this story out of the shadows.
